Optional History ( though we encourage this! ): A native of Belize, Ernesto travelled to Marathon when he was twenty-three with his father, mother, and sister via Mederos' transport. They were given a price up front, which amounted to all of their savings, the equivalent of two full year's wages which he and his father had worked tirelessly to amass. Upon arriving in Marathon they discovered that the Land of Opportunity was not what they had imagined. Unable to pay the price for their freedom once they arrived, the Morales family was split up, forced into bonded labor of one form or another until their debts could be repaid.
He has not seen his mother or sister since then, can only assume the sort of work they had been sold into while he and his father were recruited to work in stash houses, cutting and bagging drugs, usually at gunpoint. Eventually, he found the opportunity to take on a different job, one which he thought might help him find the rest of his family or else ensure their safety by working off his debt sooner. He is the contact between Puerto Morelos and Marathon, arranges groups for travel, translates, collects their initial payments which are then transferred to Max Valentine or Mederos, whoever collects ultimately, and travels by boat between the Keys, Cuba, and Mexico. He assumes a high risk with each trip, harboring illegal aliens, faces immense jail time or either side of the borders and it is for this reason that he hoped to accumulate enough to buy back his family's freedom. He has found, however, that once you are under the Network's thumb, there is no escape.
Ernesto takes no pleasure in the ferrying unsuspecting souls from a bad place to a worse place, but he does so under threats and coercion, no more able to save them than he is himself or his family. For six years he has served the Network, hardened himself against the reality of his situation. His continued loyalty to the Network has afforded him some freedoms, but he is no more closer to getting out than he was at twenty-three.
