Characters: Alexis and Mikaela
paradise and sin: With the Dive currently out of commission and little she could really do there, Mikaela had found herself with too much time on her hands, and a strict order to get on the water and get out of the dangerous place of her own head for a little while. That had worked out just fine, until a few hours later when she came in from the waves and had nothing to do again. So she bugged those putting the Dive to rights again, until the contractor that Adam sent over told her in no uncertain terms that he didn't want to see her back there until they were finished, Sunday night. Rude. Complaining to Tomas would do her little good, he'd only reiterate the message -- and besides, didn't she have a baby cousin to meet? Sure did. Sun was just setting behind the Gulf when Kae pulled up in front of Judy's in the tiny lil' Kia thing the insurance company had rented for her while her beloved Woody was in for repairs from the collision in last weeks accident. The thing was too small, accelerated too fast, and generally made her whiney -- but it was wheels, right? Sure was. A bit early, but that was the plan anyway. Laptop in tow, she had some ordering to do to get ready for the reopening on Monday. They'd lost a lot of liquor and glassware in a hail of bullets, after all. Thinking about it though, just made her head hurt. Or that might have been from the champagne bottle she took to the dome, or just everything in general. Max. Ben. The shooting. Her father. The accident. The damn unicorn stabbing that still had her arm bandaged and the salt water had not helped at all with. A combination of all things that made Mikaela look as exhausted as she felt, despite the recent pink of sun on her lightly freckled cheeks and the glow of it picked up in the pale strands infused in dark blonde hair. Wearing a short jumper in a myriad of purples and blues with a tiny floral pattern, Kae drew the lengths of naked legs up into a comfortable position, and set to work; sipping at a cherry cola while the time ticked closer to Alexis King's arrival. -d-
Gamine Beauty: happy to spend the morning doting on their baby girl. Breakfast had ran long with idle chit chat and small talk about what Alexis had done the past year, and how school was going and of course the blonde was just as happy to gab away, but part of her pined for time...the beach didn't just call her name it was screaming for her, and she'd been away from the sand far to long. It still baffled Alexis, how people could manage to survive in a landlocked state...sure they had the great lakes, but those couldn't hold a candle to ocean. Needless to say, when the opportunity presented itself, she was all to happy to peel herself from her parents loving embrace, fire off a few texts to classmates that were still in the area, then head down to where waves licked the shore. It was there she truly lost herself, hours felt like minutes just basking in the sun, broken up by the occasional dip. Before you knew it, the big orange ball in the sky had begun to sink...it wasn't until the last few rays still peaked over the horizon that she'd remembered the prearranged dinner with her older cousin. The lingering pair of friends were given their goodbyes with promises of several trips to come throughout the summer before the teen loaded up into the old sky blue CJ5 her father had restored...seriously, what was better to cruise a beach in, than a jeep? A little heavy on the pedal and in short order she found herself pulling into the lot, only to pry herself out and scurry off to the door. Late! only twenty minutes or so, but still...she felt awful, Kae had been so generous as to offer her the summer gig, not to mention...she just down right missed her cousin! The little bell above the door chimed as the teen slipped inside, five feet five inches tall and besting a hundred and ten pounds on her worst day, the girl had certainly been blessed in the genetic lottery. Flip flops smacked against the bottom of her feet as she pushed her way in further, while baby blues scanned the collection of tables. Alexis hadn't bothered to change from her time at the beach, save the pair of cut offs she'd shimmied into. Distressed denim and the black bikini top went well with freshly sun kissed skin that still smelled of coconut oil and the salty air. It didn't take long to find who she was looking for, and as should have been expected...there was a very loud, and very emphatic.~ "MICKEY!" ~As Alexis bolted from her place at the door and rushed over to her cousin~(D)
paradise and sin: Lex was late? Mikaela honestly hadn't even noticed. Just clicking away on the order spreadsheet, trying to get as much of it done as she could to be able to turn it in by midnight for an early Monday morning arrival. Poor Molly was going to have to do some stocking from hell. If only -- the woman who was not a crier, ever, felt the hot rush of tears hit the back of her eyes and her throat well at the thought of Ben. The man had been by her side for the better part of her entire life -- starting at the Dive way back when Mikaela was only sixteen and was thrown into a world meant for adults. Right there, helping her out of the muck and the grime, right there weighing her decision to join the Network, and her decisions that had to do with ensuring Arch couldn't touch a damn thing anymore. He'd been more than an employee, more than a friend. He was family. And now he was gone. It didn't take but a moment of squeezing doe eyes shut against the burn, when her name was called out by one of the very very very few who could get away with using that particular moniker. Despite everything, a smile plastered easily and geniuinely on her face, and Kae rose quickly to meet the bumrush of the girl ten years her junior. "Lexidoodle, get over here." Slender arms slipped 'round the small things neck in a big ol' hug that clutched Alexis' blonde head against Kae's meager boobs almost. Yay for being tall? -d-
Gamine Beauty: ~In no time flat, she'd managed to close the distance between the pair...thankfully enough time for Kae to stand lest the poor woman be tackled into the booth in a hug.. It was just as earnest a smile that beamed ear to ear, Mikaela was the closest thing Alexis had to a sibling, her cousin was the silver lining that was the pitfall of being an only child, how many nights when Alexis was younger, where Kae had been tasked to babysit had they talked for hours on end, about everything and nothing. So caught up in her own excitment that she was oblivious to whatever signs of fatigue may have been present, hell even the bandaged arm went unnoticed as arms coiled around the woman, face buried in against the nape of her neck for those few seconds while she squeezed tighter and tighter. Eventually, she did manage to loose her hold and arms slipped back to her sides.~ "How have you been Mickey, gosh I've missed you so much! I've missed it all sooo much! You gotta catch me up on everything!" ~Okay, probably not everything...hell, Kae would probably be just as selective as her own parents had been this morning. Somehow managing to avoid every little tidbit of local gossip that spelled out anything seedy in their little town...hell, they hadn't even made mention of the Dive and its little shoot 'em up that surely had been in the local papers~(D)
paradise and sin: Such a squeeze -- a squeeze to end all squeezes, because when it really came down to it, all Kae really probably needed right now was a hug, but when Alexis started squeezing tighter, and Kae felt the burn of those forbidden tears again, she loosened her hold and peeled back some; warm hands falling to her cousin's sun drenched shoulders. "Lemme look at you. Has it really been a year? You're right about the lack of beaches in Ohio, and you put yourself smack dab in the middle of the state too. Good job," she gave a watery laugh; clearing her throat a little to take care of that. Disengaging fully, to slide back down into the booth -- click save on her spreadsheet, and close the laptop, a gesture was made to the empty seat of the booth. "Girl, please. You know nothing changes around here. Sleepy lil' bullshit town. There's a big ass casino now though." What else was safe to say -- her brain wracked for a reason why Ben was gone, but she decided she wasn't going to bring it up. Let Alexis ask, and she'd figure something out. "Oh! Turns out, Adam Byrne has a sister. Who knew. Opposite of him as they come, you'll love her. She's working at the Dive too." -d-
Gamine Beauty: ~The teen was certainly no worse for wear of having been away for a year, maybe her skin was a touch paler than it had been, but with a brand new base coat from today it might have been hard to tell...and a few pounds lighter that came from living on a diet of coffee and instant noodles...dorm room cuisine at its finest. Alexis could only roll her eyes and give a little huff when Kae agreed with the sentiment from the text.~ "Ugh, I know. When I try to tell my friends their all like..well, we have the great lakes. Its totally not even the same thing. They just dont get it." ~Her head shook and with Kae sinking back into the booth, Alexis soon followed onto the opposite side and squirmed a little further in to get herself comfortable.~ "A casino?" ~It had certainly perked her interest, why their little town needed something like that was beyond her, though deep down...she knew exactly why, some things never changed.~ "Well, maybe we'll have to go to it while I'm here!" ~Odds were, it probably wasn't like the reservation casinos where the age restrictions were a little more laxed. The latter bit about Adam having a sister was just as intriguing, while she really didn't know Adam all that well, thanks in part to Kae keeping a safe buffer around the teen...she knew enough that anyone who was opposite of him, was probably rather pleasant to be around.~ "Really, the guy with the Irish accent right?" ~There was a slightly little bounce in her seat as one leg was draw up and tucked beneath herself.~ "Whats her name? She works at the Dive too? I can't wait to meet her!" ~But there was a danger there too, it provided a segue.~ "Speaking of the Dive, how come you closed it for the weekend? Isn't like...the weekend good business? Renovations couldn't wait until a Tuesday?"~Truth be told, it really didn't matter, Just idle ramblings from the blonde who was quick to flag down the passing waitress and order her own cherry coke along with a pair of menus~(D)
paradise and sin: "Ha, silly college friends, lakes are for bitches," Kae cooed, reaching for her drink to take a long sip of it from the straw. "A casino," she confirmed with a little nod; leaning into the table some so she could fold her arms one over the other; laying her palm over the tan gauze that wrapped 'round her wrist. "It's pretty nice, too. Has a hotel and a spa. Couple bars. Spent a few nights there this week. Kae laughed softly then, and Lex's enthusiasm. "Her name is Molly, and she's sweet as pie. You'll meet her Monday." The question came, as natural as one would expect. "Ahh, it was a little unexpected," teeth gnashed along her bottom lip a moment, pausing when the waitress came by, which just gave her an opportunity to throw together something on the spot. "Cracks in the foundation." The lie came off so smoothly. While she knew she couldn't hide the shooting -- she was actually a little surprised her cousin hadn't brought it up yet, it was on the news and in the paper, she could hide the explosion that was keeping things under lock and key for now. " And there was a .. " Scraping at her lip again, her hand gestured a little helplessly. "Shooting. Some guys came in, wanting money. Shot the place up" Killed a few people, got themselves dead a lil' bit. The use. -d-
Gamine Beauty: "Seriously, they don't have a fricken clue." ~But to each their own, she'd take the waves every time. The reiteration about the casino came with added bonuses, while Alexis might not be able to indulge in the bars and gaming...they had a spa! Needless to say, the plans might as well have already been set in stone, but it could wait for later.~ "Really? And...you're sure she's Adam's sister? I dont remember that guy ever being nice at all." ~Just left one more thing to look forward to. The seemless transition into the lie was bought hook line and sinker, cracks in the foundation was as good a reason as any.~ "Well, at least you're getting it taken care-" ~Her two cents came to an abrupt halt when Kae continued.~ "A shooting!" ~That bottom lip pouted out just a little, people were just such assholes sometimes!~ "Oh gosh Mickey, you weren't there, were you?!" ~The blonde could only imagine how* terrifying something like that could have been. Baby blues raced from the woman's face , from shoulder to shoulder, down and then back up again as if she were checking to make sure Mikaela was all there, then and only then did she finally notice the bandaged arm and her heart sunk a bit as both hands reached out and snatched around the woman's wrist to give it a little tug closer for inspection...all out of concern, despite how much the jerking motion might have actually hurt.~ "Did they shoot you!" ~Crushed, it was the most apt feeling...not only because her cousin might have been involved in something so dangerous...but because her parents had kept it from her!~(D)
paradise and sin: "I haven't demanded a DNA test, though really I should, but they both say it's so, so it's probably true," she laughed and shrugged a little, and then hated the way her cousin's features changed from keen acceptance to flooding concern in the blink of an eye. Welcome home, Alexis Rae. "I was, but I'm okay -- I swear, the cops came really fast and took care of it." Another lie, but she couldn't outright say what had really happened. A little hiss erupted when small fingers closed around her wrist and gave it a pull; the tips of which pushed into the stitches there on the inside of her wrist. "No no no .. I didn't get shot. This was from before that." She gently pulled her arm back, and unconsciously cradled it a little against her chest with a lean back into the plush of the booth, and out of Alexis' short arm reach. ".. A junkie stabbed me with a broken unicorn horn." See, now that sounded like a blatant lie, right? Until we got to this part, "at Arch's." -d-
Gamine Beauty: ~No sooner had Mikaela pulled her arm away, did Alexis find a substitute for her attention, however brief...the arrival of her coke! Straw was snatched up and given a few tabs against the table, though the frown never quite faded from her face, trapped in her own little head at all the possibilities that might have played out with a shooting, or why her parents had omitted something so...relevant, in their catching up this morning. With the straw free fromits wrapper, and with worry that Kae had actually been shot, alleviated, the drink was set upon with a few very big sips. The actuality of what had happened was like some mad libs gone wrong...right up until the final clue that helped put everything together...to wit, Kae was given an~ "...Oh." ~Now, she'd been around long enough to just exactly who Uncle Arch was...for better or worse.~ "...how is Uncle Arch?" ~It was the next obvious question.~(D)
